Kenjutsu was the foundation of samurai martial training. The sword defined the ancient warrior. Training in its use was the highest priority for these warriors and they spent their lives in that pursuit. Swords were respected and cared for to a greater degree than in any other warrior society. This deep respect and care is reflected both in the beauty and function of the sword, as well as in the specialized training required for its use.
The proper use of the sword in ancient Japan was to protect and defend the nation and the lives of its people. This deep moral commitment was essential in the training of the warrior so that the sword could be used to benefit society. Satsujin ken, katsujin ken, the sword that cuts through evil and the sword that gives life to those whom evil preys upon, was the guiding principle of the noble Samurai. The warrior who gained skill in the use of the sword had the enormous responsibility of using that skill for good. To abuse this power was evil and it was the noble warrior’s responsibility to restrain those of evil nature who would use the sword to harm the innocent.
